Chapter Eleven
âBaz?â I shook the soaking wet ogre vigorously.
Nothing.
I needed to act fast.
I hoped human CPR would work on an ogre, but I didnât have the time to consider the anatomy of fucking fantasy creatures right now.
I kneeled beside him, placed one hand over the top of my other, and began the rhythmic chest compressions Iâd been taught as a kid by one of the Rabbits.
After thirty compressions, I pinched my friendâs nose and blew into his mouth. I watched his chest rise with both breaths and then went immediately back to the chest compressions.
âCome on, Baz!â I shouted at him. âBreathe, you dick!â
I continued with the cycle of thirty chest pumps and two breaths for I didnât even know how long. I lost count after maybe the tenth round. Time seemed to vanish around me, all I cared about was saving the best friend I had in this world.
Sweat began to pour off my forehead from the effort I was putting in to reviving him, and I paused for a moment just to see if he would start to breathe on his own again.
Still nothing.
âIâm not fucking losing you,â I growled at him as I resumed CPR. âYouâre not going out like this.â
From behind me, in the darkness of the cave, I thought I heard a flutter that sounded like paper wings.
I didnât have time to wonder about bugs or whatever the fuck it was. I needed to save Baz.
Three more rounds of the compressions and breaths. Still no sign of life.
I was getting frantic and desperate.
I slapped my friend around the face after the next couple of breaths and screamed at him to breathe.
When I got no response, my shoulders slumped. It felt like it had been close to an hour, and heâd remained the same. I didnât know how much longer I should continue, but I wasnât ready to give up all hope yet.
I heard the flutter again.
It was a mix of delicate butterfly wings and the buzz of a swarm of bees.
Then I looked up from Bazâs pale face and saw hundreds of tiny lights, like miniscule fireflies.
I must have had such tunnel vision, so focused on saving the dying ogre that I hadnât even noticed the whole cave was filled with tiny glowing bugs.
I swatted a small group of them away and went right back to counting out compressions.
Five more rounds of CPR, and my hope was waning.
I didnât want to give up, but at this point I didnât know who it was for anymore. If he was dead, I was just doing this for all the people Iâd already lost and couldnât save.
My dad, my mom, John the Mallet, young Tommy.
I found myself repeating their names as I pumped on Bazâs chest.
Dad.
Mom.
John.
Tom.
Baz.
Six repetitions of their names, then two breaths.
That cycle kept me going for a little longer. The desperation not to lose a fifth person I cared about was powering me.
But I was exhausted.
âPlease live, I need you, man.â
âYour heart is pure, human,â an ethereal whisper seemed to come from all around me and made me jump.
